A little TLC will go a long way in prolonging the life of your doors. Modern designs have reduced the requirements for homeowner maintenance, but there are still a few simple tune-ups you should do once or twice a year.
Remember to read your warranty to make sure you're not going to invalidate it by trying to fix a problem yourself. Get in touch with GMP if you have any doubts about maintenance of windows, doors or siding.
Five simple steps to keeping doors in good working order
- Lubricate hinges spring and fall with silicone spray.
- Inspect weatherstripping every fall.
- Make sure the door is sealing against the weatherstripping. Carefully replace any damaged weatherstripping.
- Patio doors are very similar to windows in terms of care.
Sweep out and clean the tracks.
Lubricate the slide tracks on the operators twice a year (after cleaning them, not before), using silicone spray from a home supply store. Do not use oil-based lubricants. - Clean your door with water damp cloth twice a year. Do not use abrasives, just water and a soft non-abrasive cloth is all you need.
