Door care and Maintenance

Taking care of your investment

A little TLC will go a long way in prolonging the life of your doors. Modern designs have reduced the requirements for homeowner maintenance, but there are still a few simple tune-ups you should do once or twice a year.

Remember to read your warranty to make sure you're not going to invalidate it by trying to fix a problem yourself. Get in touch with GMP if you have any doubts about maintenance of windows, doors or siding.

Five simple steps to keeping doors in good working order

  1. Lubricate hinges spring and fall with silicone spray.
  2. Inspect weatherstripping every fall.
  3. Make sure the door is sealing against the weatherstripping. Carefully replace any damaged weatherstripping.
  4. Patio doors are very similar to windows in terms of care.
Sweep out and clean the tracks.
Lubricate the slide tracks on the operators twice a year (after cleaning them, not before), using silicone spray from a home supply store. Do not use oil-based lubricants.
  5. Clean your door with water damp cloth twice a year. Do not use abrasives, just water and a soft non-abrasive cloth is all you need.
